Creating Effective Topical Authority Maps: A Comprehensive Guide

In the ever-evolving world of search engine optimization, staying ahead of the curve is crucial for content marketers, bloggers, and SEO professionals alike. One strategy that has gained significant traction in recent years is the creation and implementation of topical authority maps. These powerful tools are reshaping the way we approach content strategy, helping businesses establish themselves as authoritative voices in their respective niches.

But what exactly are topical authority maps, and why should you care about them? At their core, these maps are visual representations of the key topics and subtopics within a specific subject area. They serve as a roadmap for content creation, helping you identify gaps in your current content strategy and opportunities for expansion. By systematically covering all aspects of a topic, you can demonstrate to search engines and users alike that your website is a comprehensive and trustworthy source of information.

The benefits of implementing topical authority maps extend far beyond simple SEO gains. They can help you streamline your content creation process, improve internal linking structures, and provide a better user experience for your visitors. In this guide, we'll explore the ins and outs of creating effective topical authority maps, and how you can leverage them to boost your online presence and establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry.

Understanding the Foundations of Topical Authority

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of creating topical authority maps, it's essential to understand the concept of topical authority itself. In the context of SEO, topical authority refers to the depth and breadth of content a website offers on a particular subject. Search engines like Google use this as a measure of a site's expertise and relevance when determining search rankings.

Topical authority is closely linked to the idea of semantic SEO, which focuses on the meaning behind search queries rather than just matching keywords. By creating content that thoroughly covers all aspects of a topic, you're not only catering to a wider range of user intents but also demonstrating to search engines that your site is a valuable resource worthy of high rankings.

Building topical authority requires a strategic approach to content creation. It's not just about producing a high volume of content, but rather about crafting a interconnected network of articles, blog posts, and pages that comprehensively cover your chosen subject area. This is where topical authority maps come into play, serving as a visual guide to help you plan and execute your content strategy effectively.

The Art and Science of Crafting Topical Authority Maps

Creating an effective topical authority map is both an art and a science. It requires a deep understanding of your subject matter, as well as the ability to organize and visualize complex information in a meaningful way. Here's a step-by-step approach to help you get started:

1. Identify your core topic: Begin by selecting the main subject area you want to establish authority in. This should be broad enough to encompass multiple subtopics but specific enough to be manageable.

2. Brainstorm subtopics: List out all the related subtopics that fall under your main subject. Don't worry about organization at this stage – the goal is to capture as many relevant ideas as possible.

3. Research and expand: Use keyword research tools, competitor analysis, and your own industry knowledge to expand your list of subtopics. Look for long-tail keywords and frequently asked questions related to your main topic.

4. Organize and categorize: Group related subtopics together and create a hierarchical structure. This will form the backbone of your topical authority map.

5. Visualize your map: Use mind mapping software or even a simple spreadsheet to create a visual representation of your topical authority map. This will help you see the relationships between different subtopics and identify any gaps in your content coverage.

6. Prioritize content creation: Based on your map, create a content calendar that prioritizes the most important subtopics and fills in any gaps in your existing content.

Remember, your topical authority map should be a living document. As you create content and gain insights from your audience, you may discover new subtopics or realize that certain areas need more emphasis. Regularly reviewing and updating your map will ensure that it remains an effective tool for guiding your content strategy.

Our form will appear, this is where you are going to input details about your business so we can help personalize what generates to your marketing needs.

First question is business name, obviously.

enter your business nameStep 3

Next, tell us what industry your business is operating within. This can be as general or specific as you desire. For our example we are in the Travel & Tourism industry.

industry typeStep 4

What are you selling? Now I know most companies may have a series of product or possibly only one. My advice here is input the products that are relevant to the topical cluster you want to generate.

If you are a contractor who builds homes but also does decks and landscaping, I would separate these topics and then link the articles when they relate to each other.

what products do you sellStep 5

We all have something special that we do, this is your chance to tell us what you do better than anyone else. For our travel agency example it is the customer service throughout your trip that you can rely on.

If you are unfamiliar with Unique Selling Point as a term, you can input some of your business information in the Decipher AI chat to help define a USP that you can enter into this form.

unique selling pointStep 6

Input your business location, if you’re exclusively online just say that. Location isn’t incredibly important unless your goal is local SEO improvements.

Again you can be specific or as general as you like. From a full address to even a country. It’s is up-to you for the most part.

business locationStep 7

Target customer or Ideal Customer Profile is important to help us understand your audience. Say you run a shop that sells diamond rings and your primary wearer is going to be a female aged 27-40 in your area but the actually buyer is their partner it is best to define that. Is the user the person who is buying your product or are they buying it for a third party?

These are important distinctions for businesses to make when they consider their marketing strategy and it something you should research a bit before entering your information.

what is your customer personaStep 8

What is a cornerstone? Well it is a comprehensive, authoritative piece of content that serves as a foundational resource on a specific topic within a website or publication. It thoroughly covers the core aspects of the subject matter while linking to more detailed articles about specific subtopics, effectively acting as a hub that visitors can use to navigate related content.

These articles tend to be longer, evergreen pieces that establish expertise and authority while providing substantial value to readers seeking both broad understanding and specific details about the topic.

Here you can let us know how many cornerstone article you want in your topical authority map. These will act as the thematic guide for all subtopic articles under them in the hierarchy.

For me personally I tend to select only 1 because I separate my topical authority maps by subject so they do not get mixed together. That is another feature of Decipher SEO you can generate multiple maps and continually edit and add to them over time as your content expands.

how many cornerstone article do you want?Step 9

Here you can input how many subtopic articles you want to generate under each respective cornerstone article. The limit here is about ten articles per cornerstone, but with the topical authority map itself you can manually add additional articles.

how many articles do you want generated?Step 10

To successfully automate the internal linking of your articles we need your complete url. Do not forget to input the entire ending such as /blog or /news for what section of your website you want the articles to appear within.

enter your urlStep 11

Now that you have submitted the form we can generate the Topical Authority Map. You will see your business name, under that the cornerstone articles and as you can see below the subtopic articles. Generally these articles will be created around the keywords that you input into the form in the previous step.

From this map we can begin to prepare our content for generation. One of the features we spent time focusing on is the granular control over individual content even at scale, which you can see in the following steps.

Once you click on any of the articles in your Topical Authority Map you will be direct to this pop-up which allows you to control the title, style, details, keyword, external links, brand voice, tone and word length of your article or blog post.

In the example I am showing you we are going to edit this article on hotels in Mexico City. You can manually change the title or you can click the sparkling star icon above and our AI will generate another title for you.

create a title for your articleStep 13

For article type, since we are creating a list of sorts it is logical to select, listicle. But, you have plenty of options here and if you just want a blog style article you don’t select any of these options, just skip it.

select article typeStep 14

So we want to input some article details in our next step, but sometimes we are not really sure what content we want to cover. So let’s head over to the Decipher SEO AI chat.

Based on the article title, I have prompted the chat to create an outline of hotels I can cover in Mexico City. Let’s see the results in the next step.

create a content outlineStep 15

The chat throws us back an outline of hotels we can cover in our article. Covering a range of options for different budgets. From here let’s copy and paste this outline back into our article details section.

take your article outline and paste itStep 16

Now we paste our outline into the article details and when the article is generated the AI will generally follow the guidance and structure presented here. The AI can drift a bit at times, if that happens the article can be regenerated in it’s entirety with the editor.

insert the outline into the formStep 17

In this step we are going to take the keywords, which we should have researched prior to creating this article, and insert them here. There is no limit to how many keywords you can enter here, but I would suggest that if you have done proper keyword research around 3-7 related keywords per article is enough.

These keywords will help guide the creation of the article when we generate the map.

In this step, we will also add our external links. I have just included some random related links, but given the nature of the article and the outline we used direct links to each hotel we are covering. I would suggest you keep your external links between 2-5 and keep them contextual and make sure the resource is helpful to your users.

add your keywordsStep 18

Word count! The fun part, select your word count anywhere from 500-2000 words. The AI will generate an article that is within 10% + or - of the requested word count.

Make sure the topic you are covering aligns with the word count. Quality is subjective and does not mean every article requires a 3,000 word article. Some topics like explain outbound links realistically can be covered in 1,000 words with images to help better illustrate the point.

select your word countStep 19

Let’s head back to Decipher SEO’s Ai chat and create a brand voice for our hypothetical company. I have input some basic information about the company, what they do and how they serve clients. I want a short brand voice description that I can consistently use for all my articles.

create your brand voiceStep 20

Let’s copy and paste this brand voice description back into our article control centre.

copy your brand voiceStep 21

The brand voice is set, the final step is selecting our tone. We have a few options ranging from formal/professional, curious, exploratory, etc… It is up-to you to determine what you want the tone of your article to be, I usually base it on the subject matter.

After you have completed this for each article, and remember not all fields need to be filled, you can generate the entire map and Decipher SEO will generate the entire map in about 1-5 minutes based on the number of articles you are requesting.
